Faculty and Staff Development

Equipping Educators. Empowering Staff. Building Inclusive Community.

The Center for Engagement and Community Connection (CECC) is committed to the lifelong learning and professional growth of Northwest Missouri State University faculty and staff. Our faculty and staff development opportunities are designed to support culturally responsive teaching and programming, foster social responsibility, and help campus professionals navigate today’s complex cultural and social dynamics with confidence and care.

CECC offers a variety of workshops and training sessions aimed at enhancing both personal and professional development. Topics include cultural competency, inclusive leadership, effective communication, and strategies for engaging in meaningful dialogue across difference.

In collaboration with the Center for Teaching & Learning and Human Resources, these workshops are offered during both the fall and spring semesters. Additional workshops and learning sessions will be added to the CECC Canvas and the Center for Teaching and Learning website. All University faculty and staff are invited to participate, reflect, and grow.

Lattes & Learning

Every 2nd Monday of the Month

Join us for casual article discussions over coffee. You don’t need to have read a specific article—just bring your thoughts, ideas, and a willingness to learn. This space is open to faculty and staff at all levels and is perfect for sparking new ideas in a welcoming, low-pressure environment. Let’s sip, share, and support A LATTE LEARNING—together.

Bearcat Book Club

Bearcat Book Club is where we choose one book a semester to stimulate discussions on varying subject matters related to cultural differences, equity, and inclusion. Through open dialogue, Bearcat faculty and staff learn to have brave conversations. By doing this, we are building community, embracing difference, and becoming engaged, diverse leaders on campus.

Cultural Competence and Humility in Education

Date/Time TBD

It calls for openness and a commitment to lifelong learning. While cultural competence is about acquiring knowledge, cultural humility is about using that knowledge to continually adjust one's behavior and actions as one learns more. Both approaches are essential for personal growth and fostering inclusive environments. During this workshop, you will find how to utilize resources for both in the classroom.

Creating Socially Responsible Spaces in Education

Date/Time TBD

This interactive workshop focuses on how educators and staff can cultivate learning environments grounded in respect, empathy, and shared responsibility. Participants will explore ways to support students from all backgrounds by encouraging open dialogue, fostering a sense of belonging, and addressing barriers to engagement. Through real-world examples and reflective practices, attendees will leave with tools to create spaces where students feel valued, supported, and motivated to succeed—both in and beyond the classroom.

Restorative Practices in the Classroom

Date/Time TBD

This workshop introduces restorative approaches that strengthen relationships, build community, and address conflict in meaningful ways. Educators will learn how to use proactive strategies—such as classroom circles and restorative conversations—to create a culture of trust and accountability. Participants will leave with tools to foster mutual respect, encourage student voice, and support a positive classroom environment where everyone feels a sense of connection and responsibility.
