Student Support and Academic Success

Helping Bearcats Succeed—In and Out of the Classroom

At the Center for Engagement and Community Connection (CECC), we are committed to holistic student success—empowering every Bearcat to thrive academically, personally, socially, and culturally. We provide inclusive support to help students reach their goals, remove barriers, and build a strong foundation for lifelong success. Whether you're navigating the transition to college, looking for study help, or seeking practical life skills and resources, we’re here to walk alongside you every step of the way.

Campus Programs

  • Jump Start - Jump Start is a peer mentoring program that aims to foster a network of support for first year and transfer students at Northwest. Participants move in early, build peer connections, connect with mentors, and receive hands-on support navigating academics, campus resources, and student life.
  • Academic Success Workshops and Tutoring - Our free academic success workshops cover topics like time management, study strategies, test prep, and motivation. Need more support? We’ll help you connect with tutoring through the Student Success Center or meet with an academic success coach for one-on-one guidance.
  • Bobby's Shop - Bobby’s Shop is an on-campus barber shop service that provides affordable, culturally affirming grooming services. We understand that personal appearance and self-care are important parts of confidence and success—especially for students who may face barriers accessing these services locally. Bobby’s Shop offers a welcoming space for students to care for themselves, connect, and feel seen.
  • Life Skills and Financial Literacy Workshops - Our Adulting 101 series equips students with essential life and financial skills, from budgeting and saving to goal setting, cooking on a budget, and managing off-campus housing. These interactive sessions empower students to take control of their lives—during college and beyond.
  • Student Achievement Reception - This annual celebration honors the academic achievements and personal milestones of students from underrepresented and historically excluded backgrounds. It’s a time to recognize hard work, uplift student voices, and celebrate the journey to success.
