About Upward Bound

Upward Bound is a federally funded program that supports high school students in grades 9 through 12 as they work toward graduation and prepare for success in college or other postsecondary opportunities. Sponsored by Northwest Missouri State University since 1986, the program serves select schools in Atchison, Gentry, Holt, and Nodaway counties in Missouri.

Participants benefit from year-round programming that enriches both their academic and personal growth. These opportunities include Saturday Academies, college visits, and a variety of workshops and special events held throughout the school year. A highlight of the program is the annual six-week summer residential experience, where students live on the Northwest campus and take part in classes, cultural outings, and community building activities.

Upward Bound equips students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed academically and beyond. Through regular tutoring, students receive support in their coursework and build essential study habits. During Saturday Academies, students participate in sessions focused on academic support, college and career planning, financial literacy, and personal development. Tutors and staff also help monitor each student’s academic progress and provide individualized support as needed.

The program offers instruction in core academic subjects such as math, science, literature, composition, and foreign languages. Additional support is available in reading, writing, and study skills to ensure students are fully prepared for college-level work. Upward Bound also provides academic, financial, and personal counseling, giving students a strong foundation for their future. Through meaningful academic experiences and cultural exploration, students are introduced to the broader world of opportunities beyond their local communities.

Summer Residential Program

Each year, from June through mid-July, students are invited to Northwest Missouri State University to participate in the six-week residential program.

Room and board are provided for the students in a university residence hall where they acquire firsthand living-and-learning experience. Emphasis is placed on academics as well as an introduction to a college environment.

Students are enrolled in English, reading, writing, mathematics, laboratory science, computer science, foreign language and other formal classes according to assessed needs. In addition, students are introduced to effective study and learning techniques, coupled with daily tutoring and monitored homework and study sessions. Various elective courses, workshops, seminars, field trips, and cultural activities round out the residential experience and add balance to a very challenging academic summer residential program.
