As a new academic year begins, Northwest Missouri State University Career Services is connecting students with employers through a series of fall events, including Career Day and Mock Interviews.
“We are here to support students and help them gain confidence in what they already know and have to offer,” Assistant Director of Career Services Travis Kline said. “You can make a résumé without our help, but we can help you learn to speak about your knowledge and skills in a way that you might not figure out on your own.”
In addition to events throughout the semester to help students prepare and learn more about career paths, Career Services provides students with résumé and cover letter help, assistance with job and internship searches, networking tips and interview preparation.

Northwest’s fall Career Day is 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the Carl and Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse. The event brings a wide range of employers and graduate school representatives to campus for students to meet and discuss internship and full-time employment opportunities.
Adison Elbert, a junior agriculture business and corporate finance major from Stanton, Nebraska, has worked as a Career Services office assistant for two years. The role has helped her gain a better understanding of how much preparation can matter at Career Day.
“Students who come prepared and are willing to talk to employers get the most out of Career Day,” Elbert said. “It has changed how I approach it because I now understand the importance of researching companies beforehand, asking questions and being confident when introducing myself.”
There is no cost or registration for the event. Students are encouraged to bring copies of their résumés to share with employers and to dress in professional attire.

Mock Interview Days allow students to meet with real-world employers during 30-minute increments and receive feedback on their résumés and interview skills. Twenty minutes are typically reserved for the interview, while the remaining 10 minutes are used for feedback.
Career Services aligns Mock Interview Days with academic majors to provide interview experiences closely related to students’ interests.
Students should reserve an interview time by visiting www.nwmissouri.edu/career/events/mid.htm. Mock Interview spots are based on employer availability and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Students must submit a résumé at least one week before the event.
Career Services offers Meet the Pros events for various majors and career fields. Meet the Pros puts students face-to-face with alumni and professionals already working in their field, offering a chance to build connections and ask questions related to their fields of interest.

Career Services helps Northwest students dress for success by offering attire for all types of career fields at the Career Closet, which is located at the Materials Distribution Center adjacent to the University Police Department. It provides clothing and accessories to Northwest students at no cost.
Students may visit the Career Closet between 2 and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Career Services is one piece of a broader initiative at Northwest to get students real-world experience well before graduation and help them get a jumpstart on their careers.
Students have opportunities to build their résumés with experiences on campus in nearly every office or area of study, including the Horace Mann Laboratory School, National Public Radio affiliate KXCV, the R.T. Wright Farm and Mozingo Outdoor Education Recreation Area, a partnership with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency or Knacktive, a student-driven integrated digital marketing communications agency. In conjunction with its emergency and disaster management program, Northwest organizes and hosts Missouri Hope, an annual mass casualty training exercise that attracts first responders and emergency workers from throughout the nation and provides hands-on training in preparation for a natural disaster.
Furthermore, Northwest is a national model for student success and career placement with nearly 100 percent of its graduates securing employment or continuing their education within six months of completing a degree at Northwest, according to the most recent data.
