HALO originated at the University of Kansas and has been active at Northwest for over a decade. The purpose of HALO is to promote and maintain a healthy and positive environment for not only Hispanic students, but for any student who would like to learn more about the Hispanic cultures. HALO holds annual burrito and fund-raisers. The annual events held by HALO include: Hispanic Heritage Month, La Fiesta Latina, Shake your Bon-Bon, a Regional Empowerment Conference, and the USHLI National Conference. HALO also actively visits various Nodaway county schools to educate young people about Hispanic Cultures.
Medium Weight Forks is a compilation of various works by Northwest college students and is published by the English Department. Medium Weight Forks is student-edited and student-run. Must be enrolled in 10-520: Publication Skills to be an editor.
The Laurel Review and GreenTower Press hosts an annual chapbook competition for Midwestern writers. The Laurel Review, which is published twice each year, features some of the best poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction by both emerging and established voices.
An English honorary society, inducts new members each year. Members at Northwest have the opportunity to share their love of literature and rhetoric, composition and critical theory, creative writing and English education with like-minded peers.
The Visiting Writers Series brings to Northwest's campus poets and writers for public readings. Upcoming events include readings by Kate Greenstreet, Carrie Adams, Diana Joseph and Greg Wren.
The Writing Center is located on the second floor of the Owens Library. It provides tutoring services and assistance for writers of all abilities.
