Student Spotlight

It’s a direct correlation of what I want to do. Since I’m doing a lot of writing stuff, being able to read hundreds of works from different authors gives me a real-world example of what people are publishing or want to publish. I feel like I get an inside look.

The Writing Center

The Writing Center offers tutoring and language practice to all Northwest students. Writing tutors help students improve their writing process and strategies. Language practice appointments focus on developing students’ American English pronunciation and understanding of American English vocal structure. And many students from the department gain valuable experience as tutors or student managers.

GreenTower Press

GreenTower Press is a small press supported by the department and managed by two faculty members. Students work as editors-in-training at The Laurel Review, a national literary journal, where they read, evaluate, and edit manuscripts for publication. Students also undertake projects in social media, document/book design, copywriting, graphic design, advertising/marketing, public relations, and more.

Medium Weight Forks

Medium Weight Forks is an arts and literary magazine that students publish every fall in a publication skills course. Students across campus are encouraged to submit their fiction, nonfiction, poetry, scripts, comic strips, photographs and other artwork. The publication is student-edited and student-run with guidance from the faculty of the course. For more info, check out the club on Instagram.

The Visiting Writers Series

The series brings award-winning authors from across the country to Northwest Missouri State University, allowing students a chance to meet and interact with established writers in their field. In addition to a public reading, the authors visit classrooms and student groups.

Study Abroad

We encourage students to study abroad in Spain or Latin America to experience Hispanic cultures firsthand. Students may customize their own program of study by selecting between year-long, semester or faculty-led trips to the country of their choice. This includes homestays with native-speaking families, courses taught by local professors and various excursions throughout the country.
