The Power Plant is where the fuel is burned to heat and cool campus. Besides burning natural gas, Northwest uses other alternative fuels such as wood chips, paper pellets and animal waste pellets. By using alternative fuels Northwest meets 80-85% of its energy needs without reliance on petroleum-based fuels. The Power Plant produces enough energy to heat and cool 2.3M sq. ft. building and support space.
A few years ago Northwest stopped burning fuel No. 5 heating oil all together. In 2010 Northwest contracted with a local manufacturing company, Carboxylic Materials Company, to purchase their used oil and use it as another source of fuel for campus.
