Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Northwest

Program(s) Available: B.S.N.

Build your practice, elevate your career and prepare for new opportunities and responsibilities in nursing.

The innovative and student-centered BSN program from the School of Health Science and Wellness at Northwest Missouri State University gives professional nurses enhanced abilities to meet the needs of diverse patient populations while being rooted in rural healthcare.

Why do nursing students choose Northwest?

First is our reputation as a student-centered university that places student success first, backed by strong support from regional healthcare organizations and our community as we expand nursing offerings.

Substantively, the program's innovation is rooted in the intentional integration of rural healthcare content throughout the entire curriculum, not as a standalone module, but woven into how we teach nursing across all patient populations. Case studies and simulation scenarios are deliberately designed to reflect rural health contexts, giving students repeated, applied exposure to the realities of practicing in underserved and resource-limited environments. This approach is meant to prepare graduates who are not just competent nurses, but nurses equipped and committed to meeting the specific needs of rural communities.

State-of-the-Art Learning

The program has dedicated classroom, lab, and clinical skills/simulation space designed to mimic a hospital-type setting, currently equipped with high-fidelity and mid-fidelity patient simulators, including a SimMan 3G adult simulator with programmable physiological responses supporting cardiovascular, respiratory, pharmacological, and multi-system scenarios. In addition, the program has a Nursing Anne mannequin for fundamental skills practice, along with hospital beds and standard clinical assessment equipment. Students use this equipment to rehearse patient care, assessment, and clinical decision-making in a realistic environment before they ever step into an actual clinical placement.

Technical Standards and Licensure Eligibility

Admission criteria reflect the student's potential to complete the program and to meet the standards required to apply for licensure as a registered professional nurse, per 20 CSR 2200-2.090(1)(C)1–2 and §§335.046.1 and 335.066, RSMo. Admission to the program does not guarantee eligibility to sit for the NCLEX-RN licensure examination. Applicants are responsible for reviewing the Missouri Nursing Practice Act §335.066, RSMo, which identifies grounds for denial of licensure. Any applicant with a prior criminal history, disciplinary action on a professional license, or other circumstances that may affect licensure eligibility is strongly encouraged to contact the Missouri State Board of Nursing prior to applying to the program.

Students must be able to meet the technical standards for professional nursing practice, which include, but are not limited to: sufficient physical mobility and strength to perform patient care; adequate visual and auditory acuity to observe patients and respond to clinical cues; sufficient cognitive ability to learn, apply, and evaluate nursing knowledge; and the emotional and behavioral stability to function safely in clinical environments. Reasonable accommodations for documented disabilities will be provided consistent with institutional policy and applicable law. Applicants who have questions about accommodations should contact the Northwest Missouri State University Office of Accessibility prior to applying.

Competitive Selection Process

Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission. When the number of qualified applicants exceeds available seats in a cohort, admission decisions will be made through a competitive review process. Qualified applicants will be ranked using a weighted selection formula applied consistently to all applicants in the pool.

The weighted selection criteria are:

Selection Criterion Weight Notes
Cumulative GPA (all college-level coursework) 40% GPA scaled to 4.0; higher GPA receives proportionally higher score. 2.7 required.
HESI A2 Composite Score 40% Composite score across all 7 required sections; highest eligible attempt used. 75% required.
>Prerequisite Science grades/GPA (A&P, Chemistry, Biology, Pathophysiology) 20% Reflects preparation specifically for nursing science coursework>

In the event of a tie in weighted ranking scores, the following tiebreakers will be applied in order: (1) higher prerequisite science grades; (2) higher HESI A2 composite score; (3) earlier application submission date and time. All selection criteria and tiebreaker procedures are applied consistently and without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law, consistent with 20 CSR 2200-2.090(1)(A).
