Check out 2009 and 2010 tax return information: you may qualify for tax credits under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act or the IRS Midwestern Disaster Areas Tax Relief
IRS Publication 4772
The American Opportunity Credit is worth up to $2,500 of the cost of tuition and related expenses. You can claim this credit on your 2009 and 2010 tax returns. The credit amount starts phasing out if you make more than $80,000, or $160,000 if you're filing a joint return. You should file a return even if you do not make enough money to file, as you may get up to $1,000 back.
If you have a section 529 college savings plan, you may be able to spend those funds on a computer used for college.

Students at Northwest Missouri State University and their parents may be eligible for significant tax breaks under a change in the law designed to ease education costs for citizens residing in, or attending college in, counties designated as disaster areas following last summer's tornadoes and floods.
The legislation provides educational assistance to students enrolled and paying tuition at a number of colleges and universities, including Northwest, which is located in Nodaway County.
Under Heartland Disaster Tax Relief Act provisions, the Hope Credit was expanded to 100 percent of the first $2,400 in eligible expenses plus 50 percent of the next $2,400, which doubles the maximum credit from $1,800 to $3,600 per student.
In addition, the Lifetime Learning Credit was increased from 20 to 40 percent of the first $10,000 in eligible expenses, which doubles the maximum credit from $2,000 to $4,000.
Students do not have to reside in a Midwestern Disaster Area to receive the tax breaks so long as they are attending classes at a college or university located in one of the designated counties.
Details about storm-related tax relief are available on the IRS web page.
