Are you interested in how economic data impacts the business world? Starting fall 2024, students who major in Economics-GIS learn how to analyze economic data to make informed decisions about resource allocation.

Why Study Economics - Geographic Information Sciences at Northwest

This is an interdisciplinary major between the Melvin D. & Valorie G. Booth School of Business and the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Economics-Geographic Information Science (GIS) major will provide students with a unique educational experience, equipping them with the necessary skills to excel in understanding economics while integrating spatial analysis and data-driven decision-making. This program is designed to prepare students with analytical skills in spatial data that allows them a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of economic activity. The program will equip students with the knowledge of how to use GIS to analyze and visualize economic data, such as income, employment, and industry statistics to identify spatial patterns and trends.

According to Esri, economic development can significantly benefit from Geographic Information Science (GIS) as a means for fast, intelligent business analysis. Economic decisions are often influenced by geographic location.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of economists is projected to grow six percent from 2022 to 2032, faster than the average for all occupations.
