Winds & Drumline Auditions

Wind Instrument Auditions

The following wind instruments are included in the BMB:

  • Piccolo (assigned by audition)
  • Flute (2 parts)
  • Clarinet (3 parts)
  • Alto Saxophone (2 parts)
  • Tenor Saxophone (1 part)
  • Trumpet (3 parts)
  • Mellophone (2 parts)
  • Trombone (2 parts)
  • Baritone (treble and bass clef)
  • Sousaphone

All students enrolled at Northwest with multiple years of high school band experience and a productive attitude (and for returning members, a positive history with the BMB) are welcome to participate in the group. In the wind and percussion instrument areas, prospective members are not cut from the group if they meet these expectations.

Auditions for part assignments/octave placements take place the first day students report to BMB camps. Audition materials are linked below. When auditioning for parts/octave placements, students will perform for their section leaders only and are not required to memorize.

We recommend all students practice the school songs included in the links below diligently before reporting to camps, to make their camp and first weeks of college classes considerably easier (memorization WILL be required in the first weeks of classes). For questions regarding what part assignment to practice for (trumpet 1 or trumpet 2, clarinet 1 or 2, etc.), please seek guidance from your section leader after you register BMB Camps. They will reach out to you with contact information.

Drumline Auditions

The BMB Drumline consists of marching snare drums, tenor drums (quints), bass drums (typically 5) and cymbals. The BMB does not include a front ensemble currently, but we hope to soon. Drumline auditions take place the first- or second-day drumline members report for camp and are designed to help us assign the best possible members to each instrument. All students with multiple years of high school band experience, music reading ability, basic percussion techniques and a positive attitude will be placed on the drumline (will not be cut from the group). Instrument placement is based on the ability of the player and needs of the ensemble.

All other information regarding drumline auditions, including audition music, can be found within the Drumline Audition Packet linked here:
