Tapps honored for civic contributions, dedication to community

Dr. Tyler Tapps, who serves as the associate provost of academic operations and assessment at Northwest Missouri State University, has been honored for his civic contributions and dedication to the greater Maryville area.

The Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce presented its Spearhead Award to Tapps on Thursday during its annual banquet at the Mozingo Event Center at Mozingo Lake Recreation Park. Tapps was recognized for his ongoing support of Chamber goals, participation in its activities and contributions toward the betterment of the community.

He has been a member of the Chamber's Board of Directors since 2020 and has served multiple terms as the organization’s president and vice president as well as multiple years on its nominating and joint executive committees.

At Northwest, Tapps has helped connect students to internships with businesses and organizations throughout Maryville. Through the Chamber and his employment at Northwest, Tapps has contributed to community development and economic enhancement efforts, consulting on a variety of projects and initiatives designed to strengthen the Maryville area.

Tapps joined the Northwest faculty in 2014 and taught recreation courses in the School of Health Science and Wellness. He also has served the University as an assistant vice president of student affairs for health and well-being. He obtained his Ph.D. in health, leisure and human performance at Oklahoma State University, and he holds a master’s degree in recreation and bachelor’s degree in corporate recreation and wellness, both from Northwest.

Additionally, Tapps serves on the St. Francis Foundation Board and is a former member of the Maryville Parks and Recreation Board. He is the founder of Spoofhound Wrestling Club and president of the Maryville Twisters Soccer Association, which provides competitive soccer opportunities for more than 90 area youth participating in the Kansas City Heartland Soccer League. Tapps is also active in the St. Gregory’s Parish and School, contributing time and leadership through numerous service efforts and committees.
