Northwest campaign raising funds for students impacted by COVID-19

In an effort to assist students at Northwest Missouri State University through the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University has launched a campaign to directly assist students in need.

While Northwest students are continuing their learning online due to the COVID-19 outbreak, many have been impacted by a loss of income, changes in their housing arrangements and other obstacles.

Donations for the Bearcats Helping Bearcats Campaign are being sought for two previously established efforts at Northwest that make an immediate and impactful difference to students: the Pay It Forward Fund and the Bearcat Food Pantry.

Individuals can make a secure, online donation to the Bearcats Helping Bearcats Campaign by visiting www.nwmissouri.edu/alumni/giving/bearcatshelpingbearcats.htm.

“This is a challenging time for students at Northwest and across the world,” Northwest President Dr. John Jasinski said. “Generously, but not surprisingly, members of the Bearcat family have reached out to ask how they can help our students in need. The response from Bearcat Nation has been swift and heartwarming.”

The fundraising campaign was unveiled via social media and email Tuesday evening. To date, more than $13,000 has been collected, thanks to personal lead gifts from several Northwest Foundation Board members and staff in the Office of University Advancement.

“Earlier this week, I spoke with a student from St. Louis who did not have the gas money or resources to pick up her hall items, refrigerator, clothing and such,” Amee Wilmes, an assistant director in the Office of Scholarships and Financial Assistance and a Pay It Forward Committee member. “This is exactly the kind of situation the Pay It Forward Fund was created for.”

About the Pay it Forward Fund

The Pay It Forward Fund provides assistance to Northwest students who are struggling financially while engaging them with resources available to be successful financially, socially and academically. Such purposes include, but are not limited to, supplemental textbooks and course supplies, unexpected medical costs, tuition assistance and emergency transportation needs.

The Bearcat Food Pantry also offers personal hygiene items, including soap, shampoo, toilet tissue, feminine products and toothpaste. The items are store-quality unopened packages. Students and employees must have a 919 number to shop.

Due to the closure of campus facilities, students or employees needing to use the Bearcat Food Pantry or anyone wishing to donate items will be assisted by appointment only by emailing saffair@nwmissouri.edu.
