All planned or deferred gifts created by a donor and communicated to Northwest through the Office of University Advancement entitle the donor to inclusion in the James H. Lemon Heritage Society. There is no minimum level gift required for
recognition purposes.
After fighting in the Civil War, James H. Lemon moved to Nodaway County where he established a successful farming operation. Mr. Lemon, also a member of the Missouri House of Representatives, introduced House Bill No. 311 in 1905, known at the time as the "Nodaway County Normal Bill." Working against strong opposition in the House, Lemon is credited with establishing the Fifth District Normal School, as Northwest was originally known. His efforts culminated 30 years of struggle to bring higher education to the region.
