Geographic Information Science Certificate


Students may earn a graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science (GIScience) by taking a selected subset of courses for the online Master’s degree in GIScience.  The certificate is suitable for those who want to gain knowledge and skills in geographic information systems (GIS) but who do not wish to pursue a Master’s degree.


In order to earn the graduate certificate in GIScience Online, students must complete 12-15 credit hours, including 6 hours of core GIScience courses and 6 hours of advisor-approved elective courses.

To be considered for admission to graduate studies at Northwest, an applicant should submit an application well in advance of enrollment date. The application along with official transcripts of all previous degree(s) and credits earned from all accredited institutions, and GREGMAT scores or alternative requirements, if applicable, must be submitted to the Graduate Office.

With three start dates each year, the graduate certificate in GIScience online degree program is convenient and accessible. Students should consider application date deadlines, turn in all required documentation, and register for classes to begin on their desired start date.

Our admissions process combines an examination of academic ability with flexible assessment of an applicant's experience and potential.

Students applying to the MS or Certificate in GIS must complete all admission requirements by set deadlines for the fall and spring trimesters. Please contact the Graduate Office or program coordinator for specific deadlines. The GIS program does not accept new students for the Summer trimester.
