SAC announces Blackbear, OBB to perform Nov. 9 at Northwest

The R&B and rap-oriented act known as Blackbear will headline the annual concert sponsored by Northwest Missouri State University’s Student Activities Council with OBB appearing as the opening act on Saturday, Nov. 9, in Bearcat Arena.

Student tickets are $10 in advance or $15 on the day of the concert; tickets for the public are $20 in advance or $25 on the day of the show. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.nwmissouri.edu/tickets/.

Doors to Bearcat Arena will open at 7 p.m. with the concert scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

SAC concert co-directors Aleka Apodaca and Bri Bales said the committee selected Blackbear as the headliner based on the results of a survey of Northwest students who voiced interest in a pop or hip hop artist.

“His music is fun, and there is such a variety that most people can relate to it,” Apodaca said. “Blackbear is a name we have been hearing for a long time. He has been making music under this name for eight years and has been known for the majority of it. He is somebody that almost everybody knows, and we just want to make the concert a fun, good experience for everyone.”

A native of Los Angeles, Blackbear is the stage name of singer and producer Matthew Musto, best known for co-writing Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend,” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2012. Since reinventing himself as a rapper and R&B-oriented singer, Blackbear has five studio albums to his name and is one-half of the electronic hip-hop and R&B-influenced duo Mansionz with singer-songwriter Mike Posner. Blackbear’s other credits include work with the likes of Pharrell Williams, Nick Jonas, Childish Gambino and Linkin Park.

Blackbear released his latest studio album, “Anonymous,” in April, and it reached No. 36 on the Billboard 200. The album includes his latest single, “Hot Girl Bummer,” which peaked at No. 91 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

OBB is an Atlanta-based pop trio consisting of brothers Zach Oswald, Jacob Oswald and Nich Oswald. Their 2017 single, “Mona Lisa,” appeared in a national ad campaign for Google Chromebook and an episode of “Dude Perfect.”

Northwest’s Student Activities Council plans and administers activities for students to contribute to a more well-rounded social, recreational and cultural life on the Northwest campus and its community.
