Northwest to present annual Freshman/Transfer Showcase Sept. 26-29

By Leah Newell, communication assistant

First-year students at Northwest Missouri State University will present the premiere of a series of short plays and monologues written by Northwest playwriting students when the University stages its 29th annual Freshman/Transfer Showcase Sept. 26-29.

This year’s showcase, “Directions,” will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26-27, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28, and 2 p.m., Sept. 29, in the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the box office up to one hour before show time.

“Directions” is comprised of 10-minute plays and monologues that include comedies and dramatic acts, and abstracts and realistic scenes.

Dr. Joe Kreizinger, the production’s director and a professor of theatre at Northwest, said he chose the title for two reasons. Nine pieces reveal individuals at a crossroads where they need to make significant decisions. The title also represents the cast and crew beginning a new path at Northwest.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to add to their résumé, but also serves as a type of orientation into the program,” Kat Bilbo, assistant professor of theatre, said. “It truly is a student-centered, profession-based learning activity.”

The Freshman/Transfer Showcase introduces audiences to Theatre Northwest’s new performing arts majors while orienting the students with the people and practices of the theatre program. Students of all majors are encouraged to audition each fall.

“It provides unique and thorough mentoring to our newest Bearcats through the use of both upper-class person performance and academic mentors,” Kreizinger said.

Theatre Northwest’s 2019-2020 season continues with “When She Had Wings,” Oct. 11-12; “Noises Off,” Nov. 14-17, the annual Alpha Psi Omega children’s show, “Glass,” Feb 14-15, and “Under Milk Wood,” Feb. 20-23, before concluding with the musical “Into the Woods,” April 16-18.
