Career Pathing program offers students, employees, community members workplace-related learning opportunities


Northwest Missouri State University, in partnership with the Maryville Chamber of Commerce, is offering a series of presentations featuring professional development topics for students, University employees, and area residents during its Career Pathing program.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to continue our partnership with the Maryville Chamber of Commerce by offering these engaging professional development opportunities to those in the community,” Northwest Coordinator of Student Employment Paula McLain said. “It is a wonderful opportunity for our students and staff to learn alongside other professionals in the community. This fall we have an exciting roster of presenters that will provide engaging presentations on topics relevant to all.”

Each presentation costs $25 for Maryville Chamber of Commerce members or $40 for non-members. Northwest students and employees may attend the presentations for free, and participating students may advance to new levels of pay and responsibility through Northwest’s Student Employment program.

All presentations, with the exception of RESPOND training sessions for Northwest students on Sept. 17 and Sept. 29, are 60 minutes. Each session is described in more detail below.

Career Pathing Training Opportunities

“RESPOND” (for students only)

Tuesday, Sept. 17, The Station center meeting room; 3-7 p.m.
or Sunday, Sept. 29, The Station center meeting room; 1-5 p.m.

“RESPOND” is designed to teach the campus community how to recognize mental health concerns. Content includes a brief overview of mental health problems on college campuses, discussion about stigma and culture, an overview of signs associated with mental health problems. The remainder of the course is focused on how to effectively respond with basic listening and empathy, risk assessment at the lay level, support, referral, and taking care of self, including appropriate boundaries based on role or personal preference.


“Understanding Your Leadership Strengths: Systematic Leadership”

Monday, Sept. 23, Student Union Ballroom; 10 a.m., 1 p.m. or 3 p.m.

The Systematic Leadership model identifies five attributes that help shape effective leadership – envision, involve, develop, plan and act. This interactive workshop will help individuals discover leadership strengths through a self-assessment and learn the Systematic Leadership process to move vision to action.


“Upgrading Your Personal Best”

Jackie Cochenour, assistant director of Upward Bound at Northwest

Tuesday, Oct. 8, Student Union Ballroom; 9:30 a.m., 1 p.m. or 4 p.m.

Attendees will learn the act of raising their leadership level to attract more of what they desire most in their professional and personal lives. Cochenour shares six decisions for leading life at an upgraded level. Her signature style of speaking, humor, interactive work, and real-talk will reveal what can be done now to redirect how to live best. Participants will understand the six decisions of leading through their best self, acknowledge where in their life there is balance and work to be done, and determine how to make a difference through the H.E.A.R.T.


“Triggers: Are You Reacting or Responding? Identifying Your Ultimate Key to Success”

Thursday, Oct. 17, Student Union Boardroom; 11 a.m., 2 p.m. or 3:30 p.m.

A person’s ability to respond, rather than react to the triggers around them, ultimately determines their success in life. In this interactive session, participants will gain insights to how people react and why, identifying what pushes people’s “hot buttons” and why, and learn tools and skills to deal with triggers and emotions.


“Awakening the ‘Intrapreneur’ Within You”

Wednesday, Oct. 30, Student Union Ballroom; 11 a.m., 2 p.m. or 4 p.m.

This workshop will help you to awaken your entrepreneurial spirit in the workplace. Utilizing an entrepreneur attitude and mindset in your career will help you produce significant and profitable wins. The strategies learned in this workshop will help position you for greater leadership and success


“A Professional Dress Primer” (students only)

Tuesday, Nov. 5, North Complex Second Floor; 10 a.m., 1 p.m. or 4 p.m. (60 Minutes)

Join the student staff of Career Services to learn how to dress professionally and make a positive first impression with employers. The session will feature information, a question and answer section, and an opportunity for to shop for free professional clothes in the Career Closet.


Emotional Intelligence: Get Off The Roller Coaster

Wednesday, Nov. 13, Student Union Boardroom; 11 a.m., 1 p.m. or 3 p.m.

Whirley teaches individuals how to get their emotions under control. In this interactive session, participants will laugh and learn about their emotions and how to calm down without someone saying “calm down!” Attendees will analyze their emotions by exploring what aggravates them and discuss how to manage obstacles so they can choose their emotions by being proactive, not reactive.

Tuesdays, through Dec. 3, The Station, 2 p.m. (attending one session counts as one Career Pathing session)

Social connections are interwoven in every part of your life. This workshop series focuses on topics such as improving communication skills, making friends, defining healthy relationships, addressing roommate conflict and more.
