Northwest students compete in Miss Missouri, Patee-Merrill is runner-up

Northwest Missouri State University student Debrielle Patee-Merrill was first runner-up and earned a $6,000 scholarship Saturday night at the culmination of the Miss Missouri Scholarship Pageant in Mexico, Missouri.

Patee-Merrill performed a lyrical dance during the talent portion of the contest. Her platform, “It Can Wait,” focused on the dangers of texting while driving.

Patee-Merrill, a senior geography major from Maryville, will serve as executive treasurer with Northwest’s 2019-20 Student Senate. She also is a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority and the Bearcat Steppers.  

Marissa Jarnagin, who received a bachelor’s degree at Northwest in 2018 and is pursuing a master’s degree in school counseling at the University, finished in the pageant’s top 10. Competing as Miss Gateway St. Louis, she performed a jazz dance during the talent portion. Her platform, “Back to Basics,” focused on teaching residents to rewind to childhood lessons when dealing with life’s challenges

Angela Luna, a 2018 Northwest graduate, also competed as Miss Texas County. Her platform focused on the One Love Foundation, and she performed a tap dance for the talent portion of the competition. 

Simone Esters, a student at the University of Missouri-Columbia, was crowned Miss Missouri and will compete on the Miss America stage. The Miss Missouri Scholarship Pageant is one of the largest providers of scholarships to young women in the state. This year, the organization awarded $85,000 in scholarships during its Miss and Outstanding Teen programs.
