AdInk visits agencies for networking with pros, Bearcat alumni

By Kelsey Johnson, communication assistant

The Northwest Missouri State University advertising club, AdInk, traveled Feb. 6 to Overland Park, Kansas, for its annual “Off Broadway” tour, giving students opportunities to tour advertising agencies and catch a glimpse of life in the professional marketing field.

Students visited Intouch Solutions, a pharmaceutical marketing agency, and Thruline Marketing, an education marketing agency. Students networked with professionals as well as alumni of Northwest and AdInk.

“What I observe is the strength of the Bearcat network,” Jacquie Lamer, an advertising instructor and the advisor of AdInk, said. “So many graduates contact me wanting to help current students. Once students connect with a graduate, that graduate becomes a mentor and can help students with career choices, getting interviews, or for understanding opportunities they weren’t aware of before.”

At Thruline, students networked with Kelsey Schriver, a digital media buyer, and Joshua Phillips, a marketing coordinator. From Intouch Solutions, Lauren Trump, a senior account manager, and Matt Meier, an analyst. All four are Northwest alumni.

As a result from the Off Broadway tour, Taylor Johnson, a senior interactive digital media major from Olathe, Kansas, landed an internship at Thruline as a marketing intern. She is conducting keyword research and usability testing for higher education institutions through the company this spring.

“I’m hoping to learn more about social media and about the education industry as well,” Johnson said. “I think it’s going to be great to work in a fast-paced environment and learn what it is really like to work for an agency outside of class.”

Johnson says she is grateful for the opportunity to network during the Off Broadway tour because it made her step out of her comfort zone and meet Northwest alumni and other professionals.

“I think it’s just a really good experience to not only go with your peers who have the same interests but to get to talk to those professionals and tour spaces where you could potentially be working someday,” Johnson said.

Lamer added, “It’s Bearcats helping Bearcats, and that’s the way it should be. I think if you have the comfort of Bearcats greeting you, a lot of times wearing Northwest shirts at the door, it makes it easier for students to see that agencies are a lot of fun and have interesting careers.”

AdInk is a Northwest student organization for individuals interested in careers related to marketing, advertising, digital media, mass media, graphic design, creative writing, broadcasting, business management and public relations. The club meets at 4 p.m. on Thursdays in the J.W. Student Union. It is open to all academic majors and hosts a variety of events and services for on-campus and off-campus organizations.
