Northwest Missouri State University’s School of Health Science and Wellness, in collaboration with Northwest-Kansas City, the Office of University Advancement, students and alumni, hosted the 2018 Midwest Symposium on Therapeutic Recreation April 11-13 at the Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center in Independence, Missouri.
Nearly 300 people from 30 states attended the symposium, including 78 students from 12 universities throughout the country.
Dr. Jackie Kibler, an associate professor of psychology at Northwest, delivered a keynote address, titled “Healthy Coping: From Ideas to Action.” Northwest faculty members Dr. Sue Myllykangas and Dr. Rhonda Beemer and Northwest student Danna Burgeson also were session presenters. Additionally, the event highlighted Northwest’s online master’s degree in therapeutic recreation. Click here to view the symposium program.
In conjunction with the symposium, Northwest’s Office of University Advancement hosted an April 12 alumni event at Stoney Creek that drew alumni, prospective students and current students.
Northwest’s Client-Based Training services, led by Rebecca Lobina, director of continuing professional education for the University, coordinated the event with assistance from Northwest-Kansas City and Dr. Terry Long, director of the School of Health Science and Wellness. Long coordinated about 35 Northwest student volunteers as well as students from other attending universities.
