Alpha Sigma Alpha celebrates 90 years at Northwest

By Taylor Middleton, media relations assistant

Northwest Missouri State University’s Phi Phi chapter of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority celebrated 90 years on campus April 7 as alumni and active members gathered to reflect on the chapter’s past and future success.

The event included remarks from alumni and active members, videos of the chapter’s activities and a tour of Roberta Hall. Dr. Ann Rowlette, who graduated from Northwest in 1955 and served as a chapter advisor for many years, was among the oldest alumnae to attend.

Valerie Ruby, a 2016 Northwest graduate and Alpha Sigma Alpha alumna, said her experience in the sorority impacted her and provided her with a sense of purpose.

“ASA allowed me to become aware of my strengths, grow within them and utilize them in the community and world around me,” Ruby said. “I became a leader and I became aware of my strengths and passions.”

Throughout its history at Northwest, the chapter has won numerous awards. It recorded the highest grade-point average of any sorority chapter between 2011 and 2016, and it was named Northwest’s Sorority of the Year for the 2014-2015 academic year.

“Even though times have changed and we were there so many years ago, the spirit of Alpha Sigma Alpha lives,” Sharon Radovich, a 1975 graduate, said. “It was such a treat to walk though Roberta again. When I was a student in the 70s, most of us had so much fun in the dorm, we did not want to leave the sisterhood. There are so many memories of the fastest four years we had together, and I cherish each one of them.”

The Phi Phi chapter was installed at Northwest on May 18, 1928.
