As the academic year comes to an end and students are moving away for the summer, Northwest Missouri State University and the Maryville community are partnering and encouraging students to “think green” before trashing belongings during the annual Big Green Move Out.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nodaway County annually sponsors the initiative, in collaboration with Northwest, and invites students to donate clothing, media and household items.
Acceptable items include clothes, shoes, clothing accessories, bedding, books, purses, wallets, games, movies, CDs and household items such as lamps, coffee makers, decorations, dishes and silverware. A complete list of acceptable items is provided below.
Donation bins are placed in all residence hall lobbies and the Forest Village Apartments community center as well as Lot 21 on Ninth Street. Outside of the campus, blue donation bins are located at the north Dollar General, Walmart, Hy-Vee and Sutherlands. For large pickups or more information, students should call Big Brothers Big Sisters at 660.562.7981.
Cardboard, paper, plastic and glass materials may be discarded in the recycling bins at Northwest’s recycling center, located north of Donaldson Westside Park on North Country Club Road.
Students also are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to Northwest’s Pay it Forward Food Pantry. Donation boxes are located in the Offices of Student Affairs at the J.W. Jones Student Union and at the University Police Department.
Food donations also may be delivered to the Ministry Center at 971 S. Main St. in Maryville or by calling 660.562.6649.
Items that will not be accepted during the Big Green Move Out include mattresses, box springs, computer monitors or towers, hazardous materials, flammable products, weapons, auto parts and TVs.
