Dr. Katy Strickland, an assistant professor of music in Northwest’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts, received the 2018 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education today during a ceremony with Lt. Gov. Mike Parson in Jefferson City, Missouri.

The Governor’s Award is sponsored by the Missouri Council on Public Higher Education and presented annually to an outstanding faculty member from each of Missouri’s four-year higher education institutions. Northwest’s recipient is chosen from faculty members who receive the University’s Faculty Excellence Award for teaching. Northwest announced Strickland as its recipient of the Governor’s Award last August.

Strickland, who joined the Northwest faculty in fall 2013, also is the director of athletics bands at Northwest and began service last fall as chair of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts.

She is regarded at all levels – whether teaching applied lessons, advanced methods course or introductory music education courses – an excellent teacher. She has played a significant role in the renewal of the Bearcat Marching Band, which continues to improve in terms of quality and enrollment, while incorporating technology and unique instruction methods into classes and rehearsals. Students describe Strickland as energetic, engaging, inclusive, motivating, challenging and rate her very high in overall evaluation score.

Strickland has a Ph.D. in music education from Louisiana State University, a Master of Music Education and a Bachelor of Music Education, all from Louisiana State University. Her academic interests include innovative technology for teaching intonation to instrumental musicians, participation in music across the lifespan, varied pedagogical approaches to the instrumental ensemble sight-reading experience, hearing loss among wind and percussion players, and quality teaching methods for young percussionists.
