Charles Mayfield, the director of financial assistance at Northwest Missouri State University, was honored Nov. 7 with the Missouri Association of Financial Aid Professionals’ (MASFAP) highest honor during the group’s 50th anniversary conference at the Lodge of Four Seasons in Lake Ozark, Missouri.
Mayfield received MASFAP’s Missouri Award, which is presented to a member in recognition of their contributions to the field of financial aid and the association, during an evening banquet. Nominations are voted on by past award recipients.
Earlier in the day, Mayfield also received the State Leadership Award, which recognizes the outstanding leadership, contributions, character and involvement of a member from each of the nine states within the Midwest Association of Financial Aid Administrators (MASFAA), and the President’s Award, which is given at the discretion of the MASFAP president and is based on contributions to the association during the president’s term.
“What has impressed many of us about this individual is their eagerness to learn and understand the entire process prior to making any major decision,” Laura Steinbeck, a MASFAP member and previous Missouri Award winner, said while announcing Mayfield as the recipient of the Missouri Award. “This individual is one that can be relied upon for sound advice, an honest opinion and a willingness to go above and beyond on any given task.”
Mayfield was named Northwest’s director of financial assistance after serving as associate director in the Office of Student Financial Aid at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Previously, he was director of the financial aid office at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri, from 2005 to 2012.
Mayfield has served as a non-federal negotiator on the U.S. Department of Education’s Negotiated Rulemaking Committee, and he served on the National Council of Higher Education Loan Programs’ Financial Aid Professionals Committee. He served on the Advisory Council of the National Loan Network and the State Student Financial Aid Committee of the Coordinating Board of Higher Education.
His involvement with MASFAP has included service as president, chair of the Legislative Committee and the Technology Committee, and participation in its Leadership Institute and Leadership Development Series; he also received the association’s Bob Berger Newcomer Award.
His involvement with MASFAA has included service as a Missouri delegate, chair of the Research Committee and treasurer. He participated in its Ethics Symposium and was a recipient of its Outstanding New Professional Award.
As Northwest’s director of financial assistance, Mayfield is responsible for all aspects of the student financial assistance program. He provides research, analytics, projections and program proposals for federal, state and institutional aid funds to maximize student support.
