Northwest Missouri State University is home to both the region’s student employee of the year and the student employment supervisor of the year for 2017, the University learned this week.

The Midwest Association of Student Employment Administrators (MASEA) annually presents the honors, which are based on award winners recognized at institutional levels and submitted for regional and national considerations.

Tucker Peve, a Lee’s Summit, Missouri, native who recently graduated with his bachelor’s degree in business management, will receive the student employee award. Renee Riedel, a career development coordinator in Career Services, will receive the supervisor award. Northwest recognized both last month during its annual University awards and recognition ceremony.

Peve worked as a student manager in the Department of Athletics. His nomination commended him as a visionary and go-getter, and called his organizational skills “second to none.” The nomination called Peve “the best of the best,” adding he went “above and beyond the expectations for the football program.”

Peve is the ninth Northwest student to earn the MASEA employee award since 1999.

Riedel’s recognition by the regional organization marks the third consecutive year that a Northwest employee is Supervisor of the Year. Jeremy Waldeier, associate director in the Office of Admissions, received the award last year, and Kirk Skoglund, academic engagement coordinator in the Talent Development Center, received the honor in 2015.

Riedel’s nomination acknowledged her mentorship, professionalism and leadership.

“Professionalism is something she showcases daily,” her nominator wrote. “She holds us to high standards and sets a great model for us to follow. She always leads by example, and her example is to be the best person you can be by pushing yourself to grow.”

While winners are selected based on standards established by the National Student Employment Association, Northwest’s internationally benchmarked student employment program consists of about 950 student employees. They play a key role in the institution’s educational, research and operational excellence.

“It is a great honor to receive state recognition,” said Paula McLain, who coordinates Northwest’s student employment program and was named Student Employment Administrator of the Year by MASEA last year. “They are selected based on their exceptional professional qualities and uniqueness in serving their institution. As a past MASEA board member, I have seen the outstanding candidates from other institutions. This is definitely a tough competition and I couldn’t be prouder of Renee and Tucker.”
