Northwest Missouri State University’s Paula McLain was among the honorees when the Midwest Association of Student Employment Administrators (MASEA) announced its 2016 awards during its annual conference June 21 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

McLain, Northwest’s student employment coordinator, received the 2016 MASEA Student Employment Administrator of the Year Award for her contributions to MASEA and the discipline of student employment.

Her contributions to MASEA include serving as a Student Employment Essentials trainer within MASEA, other regions and at national conferences; serving as the president-elect, president and past-president through which she led the organization to its strongest year of membership and benefits; presenting numerous sessions at both regional and national conferences; and serving as an important resource for best practices, ideas and guidance.

“One could author a book on how she has strengthened the field, developed future leaders, and fostered collaborations across student employment associations,” read a nomination letter submitted on McLain’s behalf. “She is truly a strengths-based leader who searches for the best in all people she interacts with. When others may get frustrated, she finds a bright light in people and somehow makes it brighter. She expresses gratitude at every corner, recognizing that relationships are the key to progress.”

McLain has served as a member of the MASEA as well as the National Student Employment Association, which honored her with two awards last year, since 2001. As student employment coordinator at Northwest, she oversees the University’s internationally benchmarked program, which offers students about 1,200 opportunities to build their resumes right on campus.

MASEA annually offers members an opportunity to nominate colleagues for five awards that recognize service to the organization and innovation in the field of student employment.

The MASEA Student Employment Administrator of the Year Award is presented to a member for exceptional service to the discipline of student employment as well as providing formal or informal mentorship to MASEA members. The recipient embodies the characteristics, standards and professional image of student employment professionals by advocating for student employment within their institution and professional associations.

MASEA is a non-profit, professional organization comprised of administrators and counselors from post-secondary institutions who are involved in securing employment opportunities for students. Fourteen states make up the Midwest region: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
