Northwest Missouri State University TRIO Program has announced Tanya Riley as its new assistant director of the Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS).

Riley will transition to the assistant director role from her position as the Upward Bound counseling coordinator in which she has worked since 2014 and helped prepare participating high school students to enter postsecondary education.

As the UBMS assistant director, Riley will provide executive leadership that supports high school participants whose interests are focused in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Riley holds a bachelor’s degree in management from American InterContinental University and a master’s degree in higher education leadership from Northwest. Riley worked in various roles in Northwest Career Services for eight years before joining TRIO.

“Tanya’s leadership style and creativity bring value to the strength of the TRIO programs in that she works intently at developing and empowering our students in utilizing the different resources for college access and success available for their transition to college,” Northwest TRIO Director Cassie Tavorn said.

Karen Woodard, assistant director of UBMS since 2011, transitions into the UBMS counseling coordinator role.

UBMS is a six-week, hands-on summer learning experience for eligible high school students interested in careers in a math and or science field. The life-enhancing college-prep program helps students explore math, science and technology topics while exposing them to a university campus and reducing anxieties about college.

Northwest’s UBMS program draws students from 18 high schools throughout Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas, who live in campus residence halls while receiving instruction from skilled college and high school faculty.
