The Northwest Missouri State University office responsible for supporting students of marginalized backgrounds, identities and cultures is now known as the Office of Multicultural Student Success in an effort to better serve and enhance connections with those students.
Steve Bryant, who bears the newly named role of director of multicultural student Success, said students who are involved with training and development through the office formerly known as the Office of Intercultural Affairs often assumed it is solely available to serve international students. It is true the office serves international students, but the majority of students served by Bryant and his staff are domestic-based, marginalized students such as individuals of color and those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). The office also provides social justice education to students as well as Northwest employees.
The decision to change the office’s name was made after staff convened focus groups to learn about how student leaders and multicultural students perceive its role on campus.
Under its new name, Bryant said the Office of Multicultural Student Success will better connect with students from marginalized backgrounds even before they arrive on campus.
“Changing the name of our office is a piece in our commitment to helping Northwest retain, support, and graduate our students of color, LGBT students and students from other marginalized identities,” Bryant said. “Through the work we do, we have noticed that many students do not initially get involved in our programs, organizations and services because they do not fully understand our goals and objectives, or see themselves being a part of our office. Our hope is that the name change, along with working to do more outreach, will help us better connect and serve students.”
