Northwest Missouri State ended its 2014 Homecoming celebration with the awards ceremony announcing winners of competitions throughout the week.

Northwest celebrated its Homecoming week, “A Trip Down Bearcat Lane,” Oct. 12 through Oct. 19, with a variety of activities, including traditions such as the office decorating contest, Variety Show, International Flag-Raising Ceremony, parade and the Homecoming football game. The University also welcomed the class of 1964 during its annual Golden Years Society Reunion at the Northwest Alumni House.

During Thursday’s performance of the variety show, Matthew Tohl and Betsy Hildebrand were crowned as the 2014 Homecoming king and queen. Tohl is a senior biology major with an emphasis in zoology from St. Louis, and Hildebrand is a senior public relations major from York, Neb.

During the University’s eighth annual Homecoming Canned Art Contest Oct. 13, students and organizations assembled displays of perishable food items to be donated to the Maryville Ministry Center. Northwest collected 3,100 cans or about 2,875 pounds of food that was donated after the contest.

Additionally, the Department of Natural Sciences took first place in the office decorating contest. The Academic Deans Office earned second place and the Department of Fine and Performing Arts took third place.

This year’s Homecoming philanthropy event involved penny wars and campus organizations collected $1,000 to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nodaway County with Sigma Society scoring the most points during the contest.

The 2014 Homecoming Executive Board included co-chairs Maggie Carmichael and MacKenzie Magwire, with assistance from Graduate Assistant Mayur Gangala.
