Northwest Missouri State University alumnus Dr. Tyler Tapps has been selected by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) to receive the 2014 Robert W. Crawford Young Professional Award.

The award recognizes Tapps as an active contributor to the field of recreation and leisure through his service in academic, research and publication areas, and his administrative experience.

“Robert Crawford spoke consistently of professionalism, integrity, public service and the highest ideals of parks and recreation in American society,” Tapps said. “Those are the principles I try to bring into the classroom and to my professional projects every day.”

Tapps earned his Bachelor of Science in corporate recreation and wellness in 2004 and Master of Science in recreation in 2006, both from Northwest. He completed his doctorate in health, leisure and human science at Oklahoma State University in 2009.

Starting in August, Tapps will join the Northwest faculty as assistant professor in the Department of Health and Human Services.

He has been an assistant professor in recreation management and therapeutic recreation in the School of Applied Health and Educational Psychology at Oklahoma State since 2009 and has served as executive director of the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Assistance Center for the State of Oklahoma.

Tapps also authored or co-authored three textbooks and is published in several notable recreation and leisure journals. He served as a fuel maintenance technician in the United States Air Force and was a grant reviewer for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Tapps received the Young Alumni Award from the Northwest Alumni Association in 2012 and the President’s Citation for Outstanding Service for Oklahoma Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in 2013.

He will be presented with the Robert W. Crawford Young Professional Award Oct. 15 at the NRPA Congress and Exposition in Charlotte, N.C.
