Northwest Missouri State University students recently received a lesson in dinner etiquette in conjunction with their induction to the Delta Mu Delta business honor society.

Northwest’s Eta Gamma chapter inducted 33 new members during the March 11 dinner and ceremony. Additionally, Delta Mu Delta advisor and Assistant Professor of Management Cindy Kenkel discussed proper etiquette for business dinners, offering advice on decorum such as the utensils to use for each meal course and how to pass a basket of dinner rolls.

“Dinner etiquette skills are becoming more important as interviews and job meetings take place around a dinner table,” Eta Gamma President Ashley Phelps said. “The skills you use to eat properly are important to making a good impression and can mean a world of difference when landing a new job or client.

The Delta Mu Delta honor society is dedicated to promoting higher scholarship in training for business while recognizing and rewarding scholastic attainment in business subjects. To be eligible for membership, students must be juniors in the upper 20 percent of their class.

Northwest’s Eta Gamma chapter, established in 1994, was one of 19 chapters throughout the United States to receive the society’s Star Chapter Award for 2013.

Kenkel serves as a co-adviser of the chapter with Northwest faculty members Dr. Joni Adkins, Allison Hoffmann and Jeff Nickerson.

In addition to Phelps, the chapter’s 2013–2014 officers are Christi Nance, vice president; Amaly Reinsch, secretary; Matt Johnson, treasurer; Wyatt Price, public Relations; and Katie Cole, fundraising.
