The Northwest Missouri State University community is invited to live like superheroes during the annual Northwest Week, taking place on the campus April 7-12 with the theme of “Bobby Saves the Day.”

The week, organized by Student Senate and the Student Activities Council, celebrates Northwest with a full schedule of social activities geared toward Northwest students. The action-packed week includes a shirt giveaway, a superhero-themed picture backdrop, “Bobby’s Big Blowout” and SAC’s spring concert featuring country artists Gloriana, Jana Kramer, Sarah Darling and Canaan Smith.

“It is important to get students to be thankful for what Northwest provides as a whole, while boosting their school spirit,” Student Senate Event Planning Chair Derek Soldanels said. “We want students to enjoy their time here. With finals following shortly after, Northwest Week is a great opportunity for students to release some stress and enjoy themselves. Plus, we are giving out over $1,500 in free stuff.”

Among the highlights, the week will feature a “Cash Cab,” a spin on the popular TV show. Members of the Student Senate and SAC will patrol the campus in a golf cart, giving rides to students and awarding prizes to anyone who can correctly answer Northwest trivia questions.

On Monday, April 7, members of the Student Senate and SAC will give away free t-shirts to students on the second floor of J.W. Jones Student Union. Also, the annual Northwest Awards and Recognition Ceremony at 3:15 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom will celebrate student organizations and leadership on campus by recognizing outstanding organizations, students and advisors, among others.

On Tuesday, April 8, a superhero-themed backdrop will hang from the second floor of the Student Union and provide photo opportunities for students. The pictures will be uploaded to the Student Senate Facebook page and available to view.

On Wednesday, April 9, Northwest students and employees are invited to “Bobby’s Big Blowout” event in Bearcat Arena. The family-friendly event is free to attend and will include a 72-foot inflatable obstacle course, two human-sized inflatable hamster balls and a Velcro wall. There will be food, popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones, as well as a variety of animals to play with. All students must have their Bearcat Card to enter.

On Friday, April 11, Northwest will host actor, comedian and magician Derek Hughes in the Charles Johnson Theater. Hughes performs regularly at the Magic Castle in Hollywood and has appeared in “Mr. Deeds,” “Grown Ups” and “CSI: NY.” As a magician he thrives on live performance experiences and has become one of the most sought after entertainers on college campuses. The week wraps up Saturday, April 12, with Northwest’s annual spring concert featuring country artists Gloriana, Jana Kramer, Sarah Darling and Canaan Smith. Doors to the venue open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for Northwest students and $20 for the general public. Tickets are available at the Student Services Center on the first floor of Administration Building, via phone by calling 660.562.1212 or online at https://tix.extremetix.com/Online/?siteID=3471.

Additionally, the Student Senate is hosting a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the Student Union Tower View Room.
