Northwest to honor six retiring faculty members

Six faculty members of Northwest Missouri State University will retire this spring with a combined 162 years of service.

The University will honor the retirees during a reception at 3:45 p.m. Friday, April 18, in The Station. Refreshments will be served.

The retiring faculty members are:

Dr. Barbara Crossland

Dr. Barbara Crossland, associate professor of professional education

She began at Northwest in 2002 and will retire July 3. Crossland taught children’s literature, elementary mathematics, and reading and language arts practicums, among other education courses. She also was the faculty sponsor for Northwest’s Powwow from 2004 to 2010.

Dr. Margaret Drew

Dr. Margaret Drew, professor of professional education

She began working at Northwest in 1996 and will retire July 3. She taught courses including diagnostic and corrective reading, language arts practicum, and analysis and correction of reading disabilities. She also was a freshman seminar instructor for 13 years.

Linda Heeler

Linda Heeler, assistant professor, fifth and sixth grade instructor at Horace Mann Laboratory School

She began working at Northwest in 1981 and will retire May 31. Heeler has taught early childhood, kindergarten, as well as second, third and fourth grades.

Dr. Phillip Heeler

Dr. Phillip Heeler, professor of computer science and information systems

He began working at Northwest in 1981 and will retire July 31. Heeler has been professor and chair of the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Systems. He also was interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Patrick McLaughlin

Dr. Patrick McLaughlin, professor of finance

He began working at Northwest in 1978 and will retire May 31. He has taught business law, and insurance and risk courses. McLaughlin is a recipient of the Governor’s Award for Teaching Excellence, Dean’s Award for Teaching and the Alumni Award for Exemplary Teaching. He has served as women’s golf head coach since 2006.

Dr. Kim Spradling

Dr. Kim Spradling, professor of art

He began working at Northwest in 1984 and will retire May 5. Spradling has taught principles of art education, visual arts concepts, papermaking, design with fibers, and senior exhibition, among other art courses. He also served as a department chair for 12 years and as faculty advisor for the Art Education Club.
