Delta Mu Delta business society receives Star Chapter Award

Northwest Missouri State University’s Eta Gamma chapter of the Delta Mu Delta business honor society has received the society’s Star Chapter Award for 2013.

This year marks the eighth time the Eta Gamma chapter has received the award. The Northwest chapter, established in 1994, is one of 19 chapters throughout the United States to receive the honor this year.

The award recognizes chapters at colleges that meet or exceed society standards for chapter operation and administration. To be recognized, chapters also must meet criteria that includes increased membership, participation in a scholarship program or completion of a community service activity.

Dr. Joni Adkins, a Northwest assistant professor of computer science and information systems who also serves as a member of the Delta Mu Delta board, co-advises the Eta Gamma chapter. Business faculty members Cindy Kenkel, Allison Hoffmann and Jeff Nickerson also co-advise the chapter.

Members of Northwest’s Eta Gamma chapter regularly win national scholarships, teach local Junior Achievement classes and trick-or-treat for canned goods. Last year, members visited Hallmark and the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City to learn more about business career opportunities.

Delta Mu Delta, a national honor society in business administration, is dedicated to promoting higher scholarship in training for business and recognizing and rewarding scholastic attainment in business subjects. To be eligible for membership, students must be juniors in the upper 20 percent of their class. Since its founding in 1913, Delta Mu Delta has grown to 150,000 members in 306 chapters.

“The Star Chapter award provides recognition for chapters who contribute to their campus community, promote scholarship opportunities, and offer student members opportunities for community service and business-related activities,” Adkins said. “Delta Mu Delta membership is a distinctive honor for business students since only the top 20 percent of juniors and seniors are invited. Joining Delta Mu Delta demonstrates to faculty and prospective employers a commitment to academic excellence and professionalism. “
