Power restored to buildings on Northwest campus after outages

Operations on the Northwest Missouri State University campus are returning to normal after a faulty switch box triggered outages in some buildings at the University.

Crews worked throughout the week of May 13-17 to replace more than 500 feet of electrical line after parts were ordered from St. Louis and St. Joseph. The outages were beyond the capability of the Northwest crews and were resolved after extensive work with St. Joseph-based RS Electric and with consultation from KCP&L, United Electric and Northwest maintenance employees, Northwest Director of Facility Services Dave Bridge said.

After temporary repairs were completed Friday May 17, power was restored to all buildings except East Tower Suites and Franken Hall. Power was restored to East Tower Suites and Franken Hall Wednesday, May 22.

Northwest sustained the power failure Monday, May 13, and determined the cause to be a faulty switch box outside The Station. As a result, The Station and Garrett-Strong lost power along with five residential facilities: Millikan Hall, Phillips Hall, Franken Hall, Dieterich Hall and the Tower Suites complex.

Bridge said the switch box that failed handles more than 4,000 volts, and the outages resulted from an extremely rare event that could not be predicted or prevented.

While the disruption to campus operations was minimal, Northwest’s Office of Residential Life worked with students living on the campus this summer and coordinated alternative campus living arrangements for them.

The power failure also impacted classes and dining services May 13 in Garrett-Strong, causing Northwest to move those classes to its Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and food service was offered on the second floor of the J.W. Jones Student Union. Classes and dining services resumed in Garrett-Strong Tuesday, May 14, after power was restored to that building.

Additionally, Northwest Textbook Services has resumed its normal operating hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the lower level of The Station, and students may pick up textbooks during those times.
