Northwest Missouri State University student publications snared 41 awards, including 13 first place honors, at the Missouri College Media Association annual convention April 20 at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.

Tower Yearbook dominated the yearbook category at the convention, with 10 different staff members winning 18 total awards, including all eight first place categories. The yearbook took the top award in Overall Theme Development, which equates to best overall yearbook.

Erin Funk served as editor-in-chief of the 2012 Tower, which was submitted to the contest judges in December. Funk, a senior interactive digital media major from Johnston, Iowa, said it was nice to know her staff continued a long tradition of excellence for the yearbook at Northwest.

“Winning awards is always an amazing accomplishment for our staff but it also shows the University, community and prospective students that Northwest is yet again at the top,” Funk said. “We are so lucky to have the support, resources and leadership that allow us to keep producing the yearbook. Winning a total of 41 awards for both publications really proves what we can do and that we are applying our skills in a way that is relevant to the current standards of our industries.”

The Northwest Missourian captured 23 awards, including five first place honors, in Newspaper Division II. The newspaper placed second in the Best Overall Newspaper category.

Ceaser “Trey” Williams served as editor-in-chief of The Missourian for the 2012 editions of the newspaper honored by MCMA. Williams is a senior journalism major from Independence.

Laura Widmer, who retired as director of student publications from Northwest last summer, served as the adviser for Tower and The Missourian through July 2012. Steven Chappell began serving as director of student publications in August 2012.

“I am really proud of the students and what they accomplished,” Chappell said. “To dominate the state awards this way speaks highly of the journalism program at Northwest and to the quality of instruction these students receive. They are putting their skills into practice in a real-world setting of producing two outstanding student publications.”
