Northwest named to Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

Northwest has been named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, a federal recognition of colleges and universities that exemplify a commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

This marks the sixth year Northwest has appeared on the listing, which the Corporation for National and Community Service has administered since 2006.

“Service learning projects allow our students to make an positive impact on Maryville, discover their strengths from serving others, and develop a connection and relationship with the community that adds an invaluable layer to their education,” said Amy Nally, Northwest’s director of volunteer programs. “We have great students at Northwest, and they really enjoy giving back to our community and to others. I am very proud of their commitment to community engagement.”

Among the service projects Northwest participated in during the 2011-2012 academic year:

Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors including the scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that engages more than 5 million Americans in service through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs, and leads President Obama's national call to service initiative, United We Serve. According to the agency, in 2012, 3.1 million college students dedicated more than 118 million hours of service to communities across the country, service valued at more than $2.5 billion.
