Second annual 5k run-walk to benefit Backpack Buddies

By Philip Gruenwald, media relations assistant

The Northwest Missouri State University Student Dietetics Association will sponsor its second annual 5k Community Fun Run/Walk with the Northwest Fitness Center to benefit Backpack Buddies. The walk will begin on the east side of the Administration Building at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. Registration begins at 9 a.m.

Participants may pick up registration forms in room 311 of the Administration Building, or at by going to the Student Dietetics Association’s Facebook page. Registration is $15 for adults and $10 for children 10 years old and younger. Participants who register before Oct. 1 receive a T-shirt.

Individuals who are unable to participate in the event but want to donate also may do so by submitting a registration form.

Backpack Buddies supplies backpacks and snacks to assist about 240 elementary students in Nodaway County who qualify for free or reduced lunches. Children in the program receive a backpack with kid-friendly snacks on Fridays and return the backpack to their school to be refilled the next week.

Last year’s inaugural 5k Community Fun Run/Walk raised $670 for BackPack Buddies. That was enough to provide backpacks of food to five students for the entire school year.

This year, with campus and community sponsors helping to cut operational costs, Kendra Quick, president of the Student Dietetics Association, hopes the run/walk will make a greater contribution to BackPack Buddies.

The run/walk will feature informational tables sponsored by the Northwest Fitness Center, HyVee, and other organizations and businesses that support health and fitness.

“We’re trying to bring the community together so they see the support they have for this program and our University and the students,” Quick, a senior dietetics major from St. Joseph, said. “We want families to get together and have a fun activity while supporting a good cause. We want to focus on supporting the children and their parents because the parents are a huge part in children’s lives.”
