Wilmes family recognized as Northwest Family of the Year

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Wilmes Family, of Maryville, was recognized as Northwest's Family of the Year Saturday, Oct. 2, during halftime of the Northwest football game.

Sponsored by Campus Dining-Aramark, the Family of the Year award is bestowed each fall during the University's three-day Family Weekend festivities. The recognition comes with a $750 scholarship and other prizes.

Leah Wilmes, a junior public administration major, nominated her family for the award. Leah works in the Office of the President at Northwest.

She is the daughter of Dr. Jerry and Robin Wilmes. Dr. Wilmes earned his bachelor's degree in wildlife ecology conservation at Northwest in 1978 and has served as the University's medical director since 1990. Robin earned her bachelor's in speech correction in 1977 and her master's in communication disorders in 1980. She is a speech therapist.

Leah's older brothers, Thate, Colin and Evan also attended Northwest. Colin graduated with a bachelor's degree in humanities in 2007 and is working toward an M.B.A. at Northwest. He is a graduate assistant in Career Services at Northwest. Evan earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 2010 and is working toward a master's degree in English. He played football at Northwest for five years and was a member of the 2009 national champion team. He is a graduate assistant in the Talent Development Center.

Additionally, Leah's grandfather was vice president of student affairs at Northwest.

"I can remember attending Northwest football games when the team was 0-11, having plenty of seats open to sit and now seeing the stadium packed full feels great to watch something grow as it did, much like our University," Leah Wilmes wrote in her Family of the Year application. "Every family member is connected to Northwest in a special way."
