Student dies in car accident

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State University student Abby L. Cockrill died early Sunday as a result of injuries she suffered in a car wreck, the University learned.

Cockrill, 22, of Platte City, was a senior elementary education major at Northwest. She had begun student teaching in Platte City last week and would have graduated in December. She was a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority and the Tower Choir.

According to a Missouri State Patrol crash report, Cockrill was a passenger in a 2006 Pontiac that was struck in the rear by a 2010 Chevrolet as the vehicles traveled north on Interstate 29 about 1:30 a.m. The Pontiac went off the road and overturned. Cockrill was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jackson County medical examiner.

The crash report said the drivers of the Pontiac and the Chevrolet suffered non life-threatening injuries.
