Northwest Board of Regents approves smoke-free policy, professional development agreements

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents unanimously approved during its regular open meeting on Thursday a policy that makes Northwest a smoke-free campus beginning Sunday, Aug. 1.

The policy was proposed by students. Surveys of students and their parents also showed strong support for the policy.

"This idea was generated by students, and we didn't ignore their efforts and desire to make Northwest a healthy and safe environment," Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Jackie Elliott said.

Smoking already is prohibited inside all facilities on the Northwest campus. By implementing the smoke-free campus policy, Northwest recognizes that having a smoke-free campus environment is an important public health measure and joins more than 400 U.S. colleges and universities that have enacted smoke-free campus policies.

In other business during Thursday's meeting, Regents approved agreements between Northwest outreach centers and Condensed Curriculum International, Inc., which will offer coursework that provides training in select health-related fields. The Regents also approved an agreement between Northwest and the Behavior Intervention Support Team of Ozanam, a Missouri nonprofit corporation, to provide professional development services.

Northwest President Dr. Jasinski announced Joseph Barbosa has been named to the Board as a Student Regent. Barbosa, a science education major from Helena, Mo., is awaiting confirmation by the Missouri Senate. The Student Regent is a non-voting member appointed by the governor.

The Board of Regents develops policy and has responsibility for sound resource management of the University, and determines general, educational and financial policies.
