Northwest wrestlers finish 17th, Addison takes third at national tournament

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Wrestling Club finished 17th in the field of 79 teams on Saturday at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships at Hampton University in Virginia, while Craig Addison defended his All-American status and beat the No. 1 seed to take third place.

Addison, a senior from Smithville, Mo., completed the tournament by defeating the University of Central Florida's Alex Chiricosta, 8-4, to place third in the 32-man, 125-pound bracket.

On Saturday morning, Addison punched his ticket to the third-place match by defeating Northhampton's Anthony Fusco in double sudden death overtime. The wrestlers were tied 1-1 at the end of three rounds before Addison beat Fusco 4-2 by a takedown.

Addison lost his only match of the tournament in Friday's quarterfinal round when he was beaten by the bracket's eventual champion, M.I.T.'s Grant Kadokura, 5-2.

In addition to Addison, Northwest wrestlers Jordan Peter (174 lbs., Kansas City, Mo.), Matthew Carroll (184 lbs., Albany, Mo.) and Blake Schoeninger (197 lbs., Wentzville, Mo.) each won their opening matches. Peter and Schoeninger won two more matches before bowing out of the tournament on Friday night.

The University of Central Florida won the team title with two thirds and four fourth-place finishers among its eight All-American placers.

The Northwest Wrestling Club's 17th place finish and 31 points were a vast improvement over last year's showing at the national championships when the club finished 43rd and earned just 11.5 points. Northwest had stood in the 12th spot, just three points out of ninth place, as late as Friday afternoon before dropping in the standings.

The club's other national qualifiers were A.J. Groff (141 lbs., Lee's Summit, Mo.), Jacob Mercer (149 lbs., Carrollton, Mo) and Austin Laudwig (285 lbs., Kirksville, Mo.).

The team is coached by Nic Brent, a senior English education major from Kearney, Mo. Loren Butler is the academic advisor and Jason Sack is the club sport organizer.

The Northwest Wrestling Club has sent a representative to national competition every year since its founding in 2004, but this year's contingent was a new high for the club.

The Northwest Wrestling Club was founded to provide students with opportunities to participate in wrestling competitions and help them improve their wrestling skills. The club and its 13 members compete in the Southwest Conference, one of six conferences in the NCWA.
