News Release

April 20, 2009

Full day of Hubbard tributes set for Thursday, April 23

Retiring Northwest President Dean L. Hubbard and his wife, Aleta, will be honored during special events on campus Thursday, April 23. All members of the campus and local communities, emeriti, former employees and alumni are invited to these events. Shuttle service will be available from parking lots 62 and 63 off College Avenue west of College Park.

Procession, reception and barbecue

Festivities scheduled that afternoon include a reception with refreshments from 4-6 p.m. in the J.W. Jones Student Union followed by barbeque from 7-9 p.m. at the College Park Pavilion across the street to the west from the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts. In case of bad weather, the barbeque will be held in the union.

At 3:45 p.m. Dr. And Mrs. Hubbard will be escorted from the Gaunt House to the union by student musicians, cheerleaders, the Bearcat Steppers and Bobby Bearcat. The music will announce to the campus that the celebration has begun. University offices will close at 4 p.m.

During the procession from the Gaunt House to the union, members of the campus community and the public are invited to accompany the Hubbards and to carry or display congratulatory signs.

KXCV "StoryCorps"

During the afternoon reception, University public radio KXCV/KRNW will staff a booth on the second floor of the union where those in attendance can offer tributes and reminiscences about the Hubbards. The collected comments, or "StoryCorp," (similar in format to the Friday NPR "Morning Edition" feature) along with previously broadcast interviews focusing on Dr. Hubbard's career and accomplishments, will be recorded on a compact disc and presented to the couple as a memento.

Both the reception and barbecue are informal. Those who attend are encouraged to wear their regular work clothes or other comfortable dress. The president will be given an opportunity to speak, but no formal program is planned at either event.

Parking lot closure

In order to provide parking for the Board of Regents and special guests of the University, parking lot No. 57 (the parking lot adjacent to Brown Hall and the J.W. Jones Student Union) will be closed from 6 a.m. Thursday, April 23, through 2 p.m. Friday, April 24.

More events on Friday

Additional Hubbard tributes will include two tree planting ceremonies on Friday, April 24. Five pines will be planted at 9:30 a.m. north of the union following a breakfast with Faculty Senate presidents who served during the Hubbard administration. The Hubbards will join members of the Northwest Foundation Board for lunch, and a second tree planting is scheduled afterward at 2 p.m. the Gaunt House.
