What Incoming Students need to know?

About Maryville, Missouri

To really understand life in Maryville, you have to visit. The people you'll meet are friendly and will do almost anything to make you feel at home. As you walk around campus or shop in town, everyone smiles and says hi, even if they've never met you. That's one of the benefits of living in a city of 11,000.

We might not be a big metropolis, but there's plenty to do in our charming city.
This town is full of surprises - you can go boating or camping at Mozingo Lake or play 18 holes of golf on Mozingo's championship course; splash around at the Maryville Aquatic Center; or see a movie. For outdoor enthusiasts, Maryville offers 13 parks, plenty of space to picnic, play games, take walks or just hang out.

Services provided by Study Abroad Office

The Study Abroad office provides exchange students with bedding (Pillowcase, sheets, blankets, and towels). However, it maybe advisable to bring bedding and any other immediate supplies from your country if you have special needs.

During orientation week, the International Involvement Center will run a shuttle service for you to and from Wal-Mart to buy any supplies you may need.

Each student that lives on campus receives a laptop which they can use for their own personal use. This benefits students by giving them the piece of mind that they always have computer access 24/7 and they don't have to share with their roommate.

Visit the Campus Laptop Computers Program to learn more.

Northwest is very unique in the fact our students do not have to buy their textbooks. Instead, Northwest has implemented a rental program where students pay a text book fee pre-established for their books. This eliminates the stress of finding books and also the heavy expense of buying books.

Meal Plans

Northwest offers meal plans for students both on and off campus. All on campus students must have a meal contract. All of the current meal plans give you the freedom to eat at any of the dining facilities on campus.

Go to Campus Dining for complete information on meal plan options offered to students.

In Maryville public transportation is extremely limited. However, the university has developed a transportation program called Safe Rides. The Safe Ride Home program is a safe and timely transportation service within the city limits of Maryville, MO, offered by students, for students at Northwest Missouri State University.  Safe Ride Home provides a shuttle system so students can travel to various retail stores in Maryville throughout the week.  We also provide a taxi service for late night transportation when students are in situations they feel are unsafe. Please visit the Safe Rides page for routes and service hours.

Maryville can be very cold during the winter and very hot during the summer. It is common in January to experience temperatures as low as -14C with a windshield of -25C; in August we can have temperatures as high as 42C, keep this in mind when packing. However, you might want to be prepared with a winter coat or be ready to buy one.
