Bright Lights Big Cities Fitness Challenge

The east coast of the United States features some of the most historic and vibrant cities in the country. Bright Lights Big Cities takes you through those exciting locations in a quest to travel from Boston to Miami.

The goal of the Bright Lights Big Cities wellness challenge is to provide participants with tools to make meaningful and healthful lifestyle changes. This program focuses on adding more physical activity into your daily routine. Your goal in six weeks is to log at least 9,000 steps daily and to maintain your intake of beverages containing added sugars to no more than one serving daily.

Bright Lights Big Cities begins on April 5, 2021 and ends on May 16, 2021.

How to Register

  • Proceed to this link
  • Click on “Sign Up”
  • Read and approve the terms of service
  • Enter Company Code BX47 when prompted
  • Complete the user registration screen

Registration is now open and ends April 11, 2021.

Tracking Activity and Checking Progress

Participants can track their activity online from a desktop or on the MyWellApp by CoreHealth on a mobile device. For instructions on downloading the app, click here

Participants can also link a number of apps/wearables to automatically pull daily steps totals into the challenge. Click here for a list of those. 

Instructions for participants to sync Samsung devices can be found on the home page of the challenge website. Apple watch users can click here for instructions on syncing your steps. 

Participants may view progress via the leaderboard or on the challenge map. Please be aware if using an app or wearable device, steps may not automatically appear and can take some time to sync.

Participants are encouraged to average approximately 9,000 steps daily (385,000 total). They can earn a 1,000 step bonus for each day they minimize their intake of beverages with added sugars by consuming no more than one of these drinks daily. Bonus steps can be tracked on the main page of the challenge either on a desktop computer or on the app.

Challenge Milestones

As participants reach specific step totals, they will earn milestone notifications. The milestones for this challenge include:

Boston Milestone: 1 step
New York City Milestone: 52,292 steps
Philadelphia Milestone: 71,546 steps
Baltimore Milestone: 94,768 steps
Washington DC Milestone: 104,267 steps
Norfolk/Virginia Beach Milestone: 150,712 steps
Raleigh Milestone: 202,857 steps
Charlotte Milestone: 247,190 steps
Jacksonville Milestone: 336,912 steps
Miami (Challenge Complete) Milestone: 385,000 steps

Dates to Remember

  • Registration opens: March 22, 2021
  • Last day to register: April 11, 2021
  • Challenge start date: April 5, 2021
  • Challenge end date: May 16, 2021
  • Last day to log challenge activities: May 19, 2021 

Prizes

Participants who complete the challenge (385,000 step or more) will be entered into a prize drawing and winners can select from the following list of prizes:

  • Heart calcium screening at Mosaic
  • Fitness, exercise equipment, or fitness plans up to $100
  • $100 at Fit Republic Lean Kitchen
  • 1 hour massage
  • 6 personal training sessions at FFC

To keep participants motivated to stay active, there will be a weekly prize drawing for anyone who logs any amount of steps OR who submits a selfie while getting steps or drinking a beverage without added sugar. Pictures can be submitted Monday through Sunday to healthybearcat@nwmissouri.edu. Winner will be drawn on Monday of the following week. Let's see those selfies!

Mindful by BlueKC

Mindful by BlueKC is a behavioral health initiative dedicated to reducing stigma around behavioral health in our communities while making care accessible and affordable for members. Mindful by Blue KC is a commitment to covering the health needs of the whole person and comes to life as a set of tools and resources to address stress, depression, anxiety, substance use and more. This ensures that members can access and afford the behavioral healthcare they need.

Employee Assistance Program

Did you know Ability Assist Counseling Services, our Employee Assistance Program through The Hartford, is available to you and your family members (spouses and dependents)? The EAP provides emotional/work-life, financial, legal, and health/benefit services counseling not only to employees but also to their families. Therapy Assistance Online

TAO is online self-help available 24/7 for Northwest employees. Several behavioral health modules are available, including general well-being and resilience, stress, anxiety, depression, pain management, and relationships and communication. TAO is interactive and allows employees to watch engaging videos and complete exercises. TAO is completely confidential. For additional information about TAO, click here.

Campus Recreation Offerings

Campus Recreation Offerings 

The Foster Fitness Center, the Student Recreation Center and the Hughes Fieldhouse walking track are free for all employees and spouses to use. Please complete the assumption of risk and waiver of liability form on CatPAWS in advance of Foster Fitness Center use https://www.nwmissouri.edu/recreation/memberships.htm.  

The Mozingo Outdoor Education and Recreation Area (MOERA) is located nine miles from Northwest at Mozingo Lake Recreation Park. It offers a variety of outdoor programs, including a high ropes challenge course with a Carolina climbing wall, Alpine obstacle tower and TDC team-building course as well as a shotgun range, and canoes and kayaks on the lake.   • Mosaic Medical Center - Maryville is offering a personalized weight management program called Healthy Lifestyles. The program is designed to help people of all ages and sizes achieve an improved quality of life through medical nutritional counseling, teaching and lifestyle changes.
