Payroll Reminders

REMINDER: 2019 Missouri W-4 and withholding tax changes

The state of Missouri has altered the way state income tax will be withheld from employee paychecks beginning in 2019. At Northwest, the updates were made effective for the February 2019 payrolls. There are no longer allowances in the Missouri withholding tables. Therefore, employees can no longer increase or decrease the amount withheld from their paychecks by claiming allowances. If the employee needs additional amounts withheld, they should add the additional amount on line 2 of the 2019 Missouri W-4. 

Now that tax day has come and gone, we would like to again remind all employees to evaluate the effects of these changes and consult your tax advisor to review existing withholding status, evaluate the impact and make any corresponding changes using the 2019 Missouri W-4 form. Both the Federal and Missouri state W-4 forms are available on myNorthwest under the My Employment tab, in the Office and Personal Forms section. Employees should complete the form online, print, sign and submit to payroll. Forms received by the 10th of the month will be included in the respective month’s payroll.

Summer Parking

From May 6, 2019 through August 5, 2019, the following applies to parking on campus:

  • A parking permit is required to park on campus
  • All parking permits (Faculty/Staff, Commuter, Resident) will be honored in all lots on campus.
  • All traffic and parking policies will be enforced 24/7, with the exception of lot designations (refer to above). (http://www.nwmissouri.edu/police/parking/index.htm)
  • Camp participants and guests may pick up a parking permit at UPD (open 24/7). Camp participants should be advised not to park in no-parking areas. If camp participants are given a citation, they should speak with the camp director regarding further action.

Ability Assist: Northwest's Employee Assistance Program

Please see the following updated Employee Assistance Program (EAP) information for Northwest. We have this information available in the office of Human Resources and you can also find this information at any time under the Benefits and Wellness section of the monthly Human Resources bulletin. We want our employees to know that there are resources out there for emotional & work-life counseling, as well as financial resources, legal support and resources, and health and benefit services. These services can be accessed privately at any time for employees. Please contact the office of Human Resources with any questions you may have.

TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly)

TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) is continuing through the summer and there is still time to join.  We had 35 sign up with ten members complete at least 8 sessions.  From the 35 members we have had a weight loss of over 136 pounds.  A study published in 2015 in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine found people who continue with TOPS for a year had clinically significant weight loss (5% or more), 62% of those who stayed with the program maintained that weight loss after seven years.  Weight-related medical conditions, such as diabetes, can improve with as little as 5% weight loss. 

The Benefits and Wellness Committee would like to continue to offer TOPS through the summer.  If you missed the Spring session you are invited to join us for the summer.  Benefits and Wellness will continue to reimburse ½ of the $32 one-year membership fee when you attend 5 of the 10 sessions this summer (June 6-August 15). The weekly 30-45 minute sessions offer education, support, and accountability.  Your membership also gives you access to TOPS online tools.

Blue KC Prescription Drug List Changes

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) Medical and Pharmacy Management Committee recently reviewed the Prescription Drug List and other pharmacy programs for drug safety, effectiveness, clinical outcomes and cost. Wellness Workshops

Wellness Services have Wellness Workshops available to faculty/staff and students.  See the university calendar and/or the wellness services website for current dates and times.

Open Mic Night Whether you are a poet, a musician or just like to listen to others share their talents this is a fun evening with some great entertainment.

Wellness Wednesday We will focus on a different aspect of the Wellness Wheel each session (physical, social, emotional, spiritual, occupational and intellectual).

Dare to Self-Care We will focus each week on a different topic to include: Goal setting, sleep, nutrition, purpose, and stress. University Calendar will have the topic of each meeting. 

Stress Busters Feeling nervous, stressed or on edge? Come learn some self-care and mindfulness techniques to help you handle stress.

#Relationships Learn more about healthy relationships and how to improve the relationships you already have (friends, roommates, love interests).

Meditation Meditation has been proven to help one focus better, be happier, and less stressed.  Come learn more and practice this technique.

Health Coaching 

Mackie Browning, Graduate Assistant in the School of Health Science and Wellness, will be offering health coaching on Mondays from 2:00pm-4:00pm. You can also schedule times to meet by appointment. Click here for more information.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City is pleased to announce a new benefit for qualified members. New Missouri Minimum Wage Rate

The Missouri Minimum wage will increase for all private, non-exempt businesses effective January 1, 2019.  The Missouri law does not apply to public employers. It has been decided to implement the 2019 Missouri minimum wages for 2019, although it is not required.  Effective January 1, 2019 the student employment wages will be as follows:

Level 3: 9.00
Level 4: 9.50

Books Before Birth 

Dr. Keely Cline is collaborating on a research project that some employees might be eligible to participate in. The study gathers  parents' perspectives on books made to be read to their babies in utero. Click here for more information.

Call for Health and Safety Concerns

The purpose of the Institutional Viability Committee is to investigate issues pertaining to the well-being of faculty, staff, and students on Northwest Missouri State University campus. Examples could include issues related to physical safety or access on campus, prevention/spreading of illness, or concerns regarding hazardous objects or conduct. The issue(s) to be addressed will be selected by committee members each term. The 2017-2018 Institutional Viability Committee is therefore soliciting input from faculty, staff and students who may have concerns related to health and safety. Reminder: Bearcat Food Pantry

The mission of the Bearcat Food Pantry is to provide a source of food and necessities for Northwest students and employees experiencing food insecurity and hunger. The food pantry is located in the J.W. Jones Student Union and is accessible from 8 am to 5 pm. Northwest accepts food donations for the pantry at the Student Engagement Center and the Student Affairs office both located on the 2nd floor of the J.W. Jones Student Union. For a list of most needed items, click here. Monetary donations to support the food pantry should be directed to the Northwest Foundation and are tax deductible.

Friends of International Students

Friends of International Students (FIS) is a community-based organization established to match interested area individuals and families (friends) with international students at Northwest. The program goals are to provide support to the students as they become adjusted to their new home and to promote friendship and understanding between people of different nationalities.

FIS is currently recruiting more friends to connect with international students. Friends are asked to make contact with assigned students at least once a month during their year-long commitment to the program. Contact can take many forms including family dinners, attending sporting events, pumpkin carving, and various other activities involving two-way cultural tradition sharing.
