Nominations for 2018 Northwest Awards and Recognition Ceremony are now available below. 

The Northwest Awards and Recognition Ceremony is a collaborative celebration to recognize excellence among Northwest students, faculty and staff. This event celebrates awards presented by Student Senate, the Office of Student Involvement, the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Human Resources, Student Employment, the Graduate Office and B.D. Owens Library.

Student Employment

Student Employee of the Year

All student employment supervisors will have the opportunity to submit a nomination for Northwest Student Employee of the Year. In order to be eligible for consideration, student employees must have worked a minimum of 6 months part-time (or three months full-time), during the selection period which is from June in the prior year through May of the current year.

The nomination will consist of:

  1. a completed nomination form (It is critical that the nomination form be as descriptive as possible as it is the only criteria utilized by the regional and national organization to determine state, regional and national winners.)
    • Nominations will be judged on the following characteristics: reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism, and the uniqueness of the student’s contribution to the employer
      • Attributes – Provide an example that demonstrates the nominees’ greatest attributes and how these attributes enhance their contributions to the position.
      • Expectations – Provide an example of how the nominee goes above and beyond the expectations listed in their job description.
      • Leadership/Style – Leadership - Provide an example of how the nominee’s leadership skills, initiative or style helped to improve how your office functions. Style – Describe the quality of the nominee’s work style and how their style of work is well suited for your department.
      • Impact – Provide an example of the positive impact the nominee has had to your department, campus or community.
  2. a completed reference form (listing two references)
  3. one letter of recommendation completed by a colleague or individual who may interact with the nominee


Team of the Year

All student employment supervisors will have the opportunity to submit a nomination for Northwest Outstanding Team of the Year. The team must be eligible based on the guidelines established by Northwest (please see nomination guidelines, on the nomination form, for specifics). The nomination will consist of: 

  1. a completed nomination form (including two references)
  2. a formal letter of nomination completed by the nominating supervisor specifically addressing the following areas:
    • Reliability
    • Initiative
    • Professionalism
    • Quality of Work
    • Uniqueness of Contribution
  3. one letter of recommendation completed by a colleague or individual, other than the nominator, who interacts with the nominated team


Supervisor of the Year

Student employees or colleagues may nominate supervisors who work with student employees whom they feel warrant particular recognition for their performance on the job. In order to be eligible for consideration, the nominee must be a full time or part time staff/faculty employee of Northwest. The Student Employment Supervisor of the Year (SESOTY) Award Program begins at the institutional level and moves on to regional recognition.

The nomination will consist of:

  1. A completed nomination form (including 2 references).
  2. A formal letter of nomination completed by the nominator. In your letter, please describe the accomplishments of the nominee which you feel qualify him/her to be considered for Student Employment Supervisor of the Year recognition. Your letter of nomination must be limited to two pages. Nominations will be judged on the following characteristics: mentoring, professionalism and leadership provided to the student employee. By including information and examples about the following areas, you will likely be touching upon the selection criteria.
    • The nominee's greatest attributes, as they relate to their supervision.
    • How the nominee has gone above and beyond the standard work expectations as a supervisor.
    • The quality of the nominee's work and work style.
    • The nominee's leadership skills, initiative, and motivation.
    • The impact the nominee has had on your student employees.
    • The qualities of the nominee that set him/her apart from other student employment supervisors.
  3. A letter of recommendation completed by a colleague or individual, other than the nominator, who may interact with the nominee and can comment on their performance on the job and how they have impacted student employees.

The information you provide may be shared with the public through press releases and other promotional opportunities.



Graduate Office

Graduate Assistant of the Year

Supervisors may nominate graduate assistants whom they feel warrant particular recognition for their performance on the job. To be eligible for consideration, graduate assistants must have worked a minimum of four months part-time, during the selection period which is from June in the prior year through May of the current year.

To nominate your Graduate Assistant:

  • Complete the electronic nomination form below and submit electronically.
  • One letter of Nomination- letter of nomination can be submitted by another supervisor, coworker or individual who may interact with the GA, please limit this to two pages. Nominations will be judged on the following characteristics: reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism and uniqueness of the student’s contribution to the employer.  By including information and examples about the following areas, you will likely be touching upon the selection criteria.
  • The nominee’s greatest attributes, as they relate to the job
  • How the nominee has gone above and beyond the standard work expectations.
  • The quality of the nominee’s work and work style.
  • The nominee’s leadership skills, initiative and motivation.
  • The impact the nominee has had on your department, campus and community.
  • The qualities of the nominee that set him/her apart from other graduate assistants.

The information you provide may be shared with the public through press releases and other promotional opportunities


Office of Student Involvement

Commitment to Diversity

This award is given to a student organization that has significantly contributed to the diversity and unity efforts at Northwest based on the following criteria:

  • support of and participation in multicultural programs and events
  • development of initiatives to promote intercultural competence
  • demonstration of commitment to diversity issues through other endeavors

Self-nominations are encouraged.


Community Leadership Award

This award is given to a student organization that best exemplifies servant leadership in community service based on the following criteria:

  • benefit to the community taking into consideration contact hours, monetary contribution, and overall impact
  • benefit to organization members taking into consideration the number of participants and level of self-commitment

Self-nominations are encouraged.


Outstanding New Organization Award

This award is given to a new student organization (must exist for less than or equal to 3 years) that displays outstanding effort in all areas based on the following criteria:

  • contributions to the University and community
  • development of its members
  • organizational collaboration

Self-nominations are encouraged.


Outstanding Organizational Advisor

The purpose of the Outstanding Organizational Advisor Award is to recognize the outstanding service and contributions to student organizations by advisors based on the following criteria:

  • goes above and beyond the call of duty
  • provides guidance, leadership and personal development to members
  • supports the organization in activities and events
  • promotes student success, scholarship and life-long learning

Self-nominations are encouraged.


Outstanding Program of the Year

This award is given to a registered student organization for the most outstanding program based on the following criteria:

  • team initiative and enterprise
  • enhancement of the campus/community environment
  • achievement of goals through collaboration

Self-nominations are encouraged.


Outstanding Student of the Year

This award is given to a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior and recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence based on the following criteria:

  • academics, community service, work experience and school spirit
  • awards and achievement
  • leadership at Northwest

Self-nominations are encouraged.


Outstanding Student Organization Award

This award is given to a registered student organization that displays outstanding effort in all areas, in relation to its purpose, based on the following criteria:

  • contributions to the University and community
  • development of its members
  • organizational collaboration

Self-nominations are encouraged.


Student Organization President of the Year

This award recognizes an organization President who has shown exceptional leadership based on the following criteria:

  • executive board officers’ training
  • leadership style and motivation techniques
  • campus citizenship
  • demonstrates financial responsibility

Self-nominations are encouraged.


Sustainability Leadership

This award is given to a student organization based on the following criteria:

  • outstanding contribution and leadership in supporting sustainability at Northwest
  • promotes sustainability through research or other student-initiated projects
  • leadership in a project or organizations that has made a significant contribution to environmental protection

B.D. Owens Library

Undergraduate Library Research Awards

This award is designed to encourage critical thinking and reward undergraduate students for research excellence. Papers are judged by a panel of faculty and librarians based on the application of scholarly information sources to the topic; the demonstration of skillful incorporation of source content to support the paper's thesis; and a responsible use of information by providing complete and accurate citations.

A VISA gift certificate will be awarded to authors of the top three papers:

First place $200
Second place $150
Third place $100

Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Commitment to Social Justice Student Award

This award recognizes a student leader who has worked to create an inclusive environment for all identities while continuing to grow and develop in their understanding of their own identity. This person will demonstrate inclusive practices within the work they do, whether that be within an organization, at a campus job, or in their place of residence.

The award will be judged upon the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of ones’ own identity
  • Fostering an environment inclusive to others
  • Challenging others to grow and develop within their social justice knowledge

Self-nominations are encouraged.


Commitment to Social Justice Faculty/Staff Award

This award recognizes a faculty or staff member who has worked to create an inclusive environment for all identities while continuing to grow and develop in their understanding of their own identity. This person will demonstrate inclusive practices within the work they do, whether that be within their work, organization, or other parts of the campus community.

The award will be judged upon the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of ones’ own identity
  • Fostering an environment inclusive to others
  • Challenging others to grow and develop within their social justice knowledge

Office of Human Resources

Student Impact Award

The Student Impact Award is given to honor outstanding Northwest employees.

Awards are given to one faculty member, one Administrative/Professional Staff, and one Support Staff member based on exceptional commitment to the mission of Northwest: Focusing on Student Success - every student, every day.

Student Senate

Tower Service Award

The Tower Service Award is the highest honor that Northwest can bestow on its students and employees. The Student Senate established the Tower Service Award in 1987 and is presented to individuals, advisors, and teams who demonstrate exceptional commitment to the University and its mission. Recipients are selected based on their continuing accomplishments and service to the Northwest community.
