SoftChalk Lesson Builder

Dr. Nancy Foley has been working with technology and online courses for several years and is always looking for new ways to use technology with her students and classes. SoftChalk's Lesson Builder is just the latest tool that Dr. Foley is using to make her classes more engaging and interactive. She teaches Introduction for Teaching Students with Mild and Moderate Disabilities and developed a SoftChalk lesson during the fall of 2008. In this course, she helps students understand the Individualized Education Program or IEP process for students with mild and moderate disabilities. This process is quite complicated with many components. She plans to expand this lesson during the spring of 2009.

Using SoftChalk's Lesson Builder, Dr. Foley was able to organize the various components of the IEP process in a tutorial format. She divided the process into four parts: 1) demographic information, 2) present level, 3) special considerations, and 4) annual goals. This allowed students to easily locate information for each of these sections. Within these four areas, Dr. Foley used text pop-ups to help students understand the associated terminology. A link to a sample form was added to the Hand Outs sidebar so that students could easily view the sample while reading about the document.

Within the text, an activity was designed for students to practice calculating chronological age which is a requirement of the process. A sample problem is provided to students with instructions on how to appropriately calculate chronological age. Following these instructions are four sample problems for students to work through.

An activity was developed using the text pop-up tool that provides students with the opportunity to practice identification of various phrases used in writing an IEP. Links to external websites and sample forms are included within the text of each of the lessons.

This lesson is built into Dr. Foley's eCourse site and is part of the entire curriculum she uses in teaching this course. Students can refer back to the lessons as they are working on assignments and projects for the course.
