Using SoftChalk to Create Content Lessons

The foundation for most courses is the delivery of content.  A unique way to deliver content using the course management system is SoftChalk.  This software is a powerful web lesson editor that lets you easily create engaging, interactive web lessons that can be embedded in the Northwest Online course site.  This type of content development is perfect for the online, blended or campus-based course.  It allows for a more interactive approach to content delivery and helps provide a way to engage students in the content.

Dr. Sue Myllykangas has been creating SoftChalk lessons for several semesters and through this work she has developed a unique approach to her content.  The course is 45-216 Gerontology which is a blended course.  Dr. Myllykangas begins with a lesson which introduces the students to the course.  She introduces herself to the class in order to provide a connection with students.  Following the introduction is a list of outcomes, details about how to use the online course site, and other important information in order to be successful in the course.

The course site’s navigation bar is divided into thematic topics based on the content of the course.  Each thematic topic includes a lesson developed using SoftChalk.  Lessons are designed in a similar format with an overview, professor’s notes, and assignments.  Included below the thematic lesson is a quiz which is built in Exam Builder of Northwest Online.

The thematic lesson’s overview contains the outcomes, links to required readings, and professor notes.  The notes include embedded videos and highlighted vocabulary.  The videos provide a different approach to the content for students and enhance the required readings.  The thematic lesson is wrapped up with a formative quiz covering the lesson.

SoftChalk is a software that is included in the faculty load set.  Northwest has a site license with gold support. All faculty can use this software as well as participate in the online training offered by SoftChalk. These can be found at
